Why Install a Vertical Water Heater

Summary

– Vertical water heater: less cumbersome than the horizontal one

– The regulated installation of the vertical water heater

– Vertical water heaters: installation and layout rules

Are you hesitating between a vertical water heater, a horizontal water heater, or a mini water heater?

The type of installation of a water heater depends on its capacity (in liters) and the force standards.

Vertical water heater: less cumbersome than a horizontal one

The vertical water heater is the standard of the storage water heater.

It is to be preferred to the horizontal water heater which, according to the regulations in force, requires for the same hot water needs a capacity of 50 liters more due to its operating model.

The choice between vertical and horizontal water heaters depends only on the amount of space you have available. The vertical water heater has the same characteristics as the horizontal water heater with the same capacity, the losses and the maintenance of hot water temperature are identical whatever the model.

The regulated installation of the vertical water heater

Ideally, it would help if you place the vertical storage water heater in a heated space: this reduces heat loss and excess electricity consumption (for electric water heaters).

If you cannot install your storage water heater in a heated space, there are a few rules to follow:

    • a pipe length reduced as much as possible between the cumulus and the water drawing points,
    • thermal insulation of the pipes,

A distance of 8 m maximum is allowed between the water heater and the tapping points in a heated or unheated volume. Beyond this distance, it is preferable to provide for another water heater, such as an instantaneous production appliance.

In dry rooms, the water heater can be installed anywhere, whereas, in wet places, it must comply with the IEC/NEC standard (for the safety of electrical installations).

Vertical water heater: installation and layout rules

Standing water heater has two types of installation. It can be:

    • installed on the ground,
    • fixed to the wall with brackets or straps.

In all cases, the installer will have to follow the regulations and standards:

    • electrical appliances must be earthed,
    • follow the IEC/NEC standard: low voltage electrical installation.

Vertical water heater standards (IEC/NEC)

The rooms are divided into four volumes (0 to 4).

The water heater, depending on its characteristics, cannot be installed inside some of these volumes (for example, in the bathroom).

Here is a table summarizing the standards to be respected for the installation of a vertical water heater:

Water Heaters: Installation Standards

Instantaneous water heater

In volume 3 and out of volume.
When this is not possible, consider a vertical water heater: in volume 2.

In volumes 1 and 2.

The pipes must be conductive, and a 30 mA differential must protect the water heater.

Dimensions for the installation of the electric water heater

To install your electric water heater, you must comply with specific rules regarding the water heater’s dimensions and the wall to which it is attached.

The vertical (stable) water heater must have a minimum clearance of 75 cm in front of it.

Here is a diagram explaining these dimensions:

Here are the different techniques for fixing water heaters according to the type of support:
